ABSTRACT

Total productive maintenance (TPM) is widely established throughout Japanese industry, where the majority of companies that practice it have had excellent results. It discusses a growing reputation both in Japan and abroad. Step of the new TPM development program consists of setting basic TPM policy and goals. The most difficult question at this stage is how high above baselines to set improvement goals. TPM goals must mesh with the company's business goals. TPM effectiveness indicators must be immune to fluctuations in demand or seasonal changes, and must fairly reflect the accumulated results of daily activities and countermeasures. TPM effectiveness indicators can be classified into seven types: management; plant effectiveness; quality; energy-saving; maintenance; health, safety, and environment; and finally training and morale. The chapter discusses these seven types. Evaluating TPM involves assessing whether the company has achieved the policy and goals set at the introduction of TPM and realized the intended benefits.
