ABSTRACT

The most important part of the 5Ss is thorough training and discipline about the first 2Ss: Organization and Orderliness. Three points must be followed for success in this approach. First, make sure the top managers have their own act together. Second, create a system that fosters repetition and review. Third, devise a motivating strategy that keeps everyone aware of the results of their efforts. The pre-setup stage is most important because it determines whether changeover and other operations will occur without any waste. The definitions of the 2Ss boil down to making sure that there are no unnecessary items in the area and that all the necessary items are within reach for immediate use. Stated another way, implementing the 2Ss means placing work and tools according to a plan based on the flow of the process; the question of what to place where and in what amounts should also be determined according to this flow.
