ABSTRACT

The uses of vinyl chloride include: in protective clothing; medical equipment; car parts; adhesives; and production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and methyl chloroform. Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) was formerly used as a refrigerant and propellant, but was banned in 1974 due to its carcinogenic activity. The primary toxic hazards are to vinyl chloride gas, and inhalation of unpolymerized vinyl chloride monomers found in PVC particles.
