ABSTRACT

The sources of carbon monoxide include: from closed space (indoor) fires; from inhalation of methylene chloride; and from places associated with incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels in conjunction with poor ventilation. Non-occupational sources of carbon monoxide include: car exhaust, which contains 1 to 7% carbon monoxide; burning of charcoal; and poorly ventilated wood/coal stoves. Natural gas used in the U.S. doesn’t contain carbon monoxide, but it can produce carbon monoxide if it is burned with insufficient amounts of air.
