ABSTRACT
International standards had their origin in World War II when military allies needed to adopt some common units of measure and product specifications for munitions, vehicles, and military hardware. These later became known as MilSpecs. Even today, many standards are the descendants of these early standards. Industry followed the lead of the military, but industries in each country developed their own standards, and the result was incompatibility across boundaries.
