ABSTRACT

According to the physical law of inertia, a body in motion tends to remain in motion and a body at rest tends to remain at rest. In the same way, when human beings perform a given task, they tend to resist any change in the procedures they use. The author often observes that the force of habit offers powerful resistance to the implementation of plans for improvement. It is clearly true that the easiest methods are those we are familiar with. When a method is familiar, we move naturally, without having to think about what should be done next or how each task should be done. This means that there is no psychological burden involved, and a worker can hum as he works. Workers end up believing that familiar operations are the easiest and therefore the best way of doing things.
