ABSTRACT

In a Greek restaurant, if a person finds it hard to choose from an unfamiliar menu, he can settle for 'mezes' – a small portion of everything. This chapter summarises the rest of the book, and suggests how a person uses it to obtain the best return on his time investment in reading it. Air travel is a common experience for many people nowadays, but even so you have to be pretty blasé not to be moved by the opportunity of looking down in detached comfort as well-known landmarks take on a new perspective and merge into less familiar terrain. The book is organised in three sections. This structure, which recurs in different contexts like a 'leit-motif' throughout the book, embodies the three key stages in mastering a complex behavioural skill, whether it be consulting with a patient, or playing a musical instrument, or shooting at a target. These stages are goal-setting, skill-building, and getting it together.
