ABSTRACT

Wastewater operations usually produce sludge and solids. Sludges are frequently less than 5% solids, if fact many sludges are much less than 5% solids and need to be dewatered for cost effective disposal. Every plant should perform a solid wastes inventory, and this inventory should go back to the source of the solid wastes. A solid waste management plan can be formulated which can find the most cost-effective method to dispose of these wastes. Landfills are designed to prevent the contamination of ground water and to prevent the migration of the wastes from the landfill. There are two types of landfills for industrial wastes: those which accept non-hazardous wastes and those that accept hazardous wastes. There are a number of different types of incinerators, each of which can incinerate a limited range of wastes. These are kilns, horizontal spray incinerators, vortex melting furnaces, vertical spray incinerators, multiple hearth incinerators, low velocity fluidized bed incinerators, and high velocity fluidized bed incinerators.
