ABSTRACT

This chapter covers treatment of spent amines. Spent amine is detrimental to good operation of a biological treatment plant. The chapter discusses methods to treat spent caustics. Spent caustic streams require treatment before they can be biologically decomposed in the wastewater plant. The chapter explains methods to calculate velocity. Sewers are designed to flow at a minimum velocity of 2 feet per second. This velocity is used by regulatory agencies when checking the size of sewers and will move most solids through the system. Standards for construction of sewers handling regulated volatile organic compounds materials, such as benzene, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) materials, or any other regulated material, are given in the government regulations. The regulations should also be consulted to determine conveyance requirements for such materials. The design and construction of wastewater collection and treatment systems are now subject to many regulations. The RCRA regulate the transport, storage, and disposal of hazardous wastes.
