ABSTRACT

The top of a ladder is the workplace for a window cleaner and the hazards are obvious, while the stage at a rock concert is the workplace for a performer in danger of being electrocuted by his own guitar. In the top right hand corner is an afflicted worker who looks as though he is having a dislocated shoulder re-set by a first-aider, while the hairless little fellow on the left hand scaffolding has clearly dropped a mallet on his big toe. A coroner’s inquest was taken, and the jury brought in their verdict accidental death; they also levied a fine of £5 upon the proprietors, intended to operate as a caution to owners of interior works how they admit persons to inspect them without a guide.’ A great part of the roof of that extensive building fell in, while all the hands were at work, owing to the timber’s drawing from the walls.
