ABSTRACT

We have considered, in the previous chapters, various ways of transmitting information from one location to another. We concern ourselves now with the performance of these systems in a noisy environment. This comparative analysis will provide the insight required to determine the suitability, or otherwise, of using a particular form of transmission in a specific environment. The relative performance of various systems in noise is, of course, only one of the factors taken into account when choosing a particular method of information transmission. The economic considerations, e.g. cost, complexity, maintenance, are sometimes of paramount importance, but are outside the scope of this text.
