ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book illustrates the role of surfactants in various agrochemical formulations. It deals with the physical chemistry of surfactant solutions. This includes properties of surfactant solutions, their micellization, and solubility. At relatively high concentration, surfactants form liquid crystalline phases in aqueous solution that may have a big influence on the performance of the agrochemical. The book deals with the process of adsorption of surfactants. Understanding adsorption and conformation of surfactants and polymers at the oil/water and solid/liquid interface is crucial in determining the stability/instability of emulsions and suspensions. The book deals with the role of surfactants in emulsifiable concentrates, emulsions, suspension concentrates, and microemulsions. It deals with the role of surfactants in transfer and performance of pesticides. The role of surfactants and polymers in spray formation as well as their impaction and adhesion is considered.
