ABSTRACT
The expectation or expected value of a random variable is obtained by finding the average value of the variable over all possible values of the variable. Expectation of a random variable was introduced in Section 3.3, in discussing the mean and variance of a population. In this chapter we summarize those results and present a more complete treatment of expectation.
