ABSTRACT

Monthly average daytime temperatures and the percent of possible sunshine values are presented in the file Weather Data-F for over 150 United States (US) cities. The file Weather Data-TT references the same US cities; however, instead of average daytime temperatures, it lists average daily temperatures. Average daytime temperatures are used when analyzing solar collection while the sun is shining. Average daily temperatures are used when analyzing the average heat loss over a 24-hour period, daytime and nighttime. The chapter presents a sample problem that illustrates how to analyze a solar space heating system. A monthly bill for the heating fuel can be used to estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient for the home. If substantial outside lighting is used, estimate the monthly kiloWatt-hours used by the outside lights and subtract this from the monthly overall usage.
