ABSTRACT

Seafood and their recognized important lipid component are reaching unpredicted popularity as important nutritional contributions to man's diet. The current popular advertisements for seafood, "Eat Fish for Health" and "Get Your Daily Omega-3 Fish Oils for Health" are certainly a change for those who remember the status of fish in the days of taking a spoonful of smelly cod liver oil every morning for their Vitamins A and D. After briefly reviewing and commenting on this research, the authors set the stage for the future of fish oils as related to the practical aspects of continuing such research and developing a viable commercial source of high-quality marine lipids for improving the nutritional well-being of the world's population. To show the differences in amounts of n-3 fatty acids in fish, it has become common to compare the relative value of fish oils for human nutrition by determining the ratio between n-3 and n-6 fatty acids in the oil.
