ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates circumstances associated with some rockburst occurrences in the Ruhr District. The geological conditions appear fairly similar to those in other districts where bursts have been experienced. The mining conditions are comparable only to a limited extent, mainly because mining has progressed, from seam to seam, to increasing depths for nearly a century. The burst took place on the longwall face while coalwinning was in progress. It damaged the longwall area for a distance of approximately 15 m, pushing the face coal towards the goaf and knocking down part of the timber supports. The seam had been mined extensively for several decades without any burst occurrence. Moreover, rockbursts had not been experienced at all in the 80 year old mine. The intense destruction of the coal near and in the gateroad was promoted by the falling of the expelled coal to the dinted floor.
