ABSTRACT

The lack of a properly prepared project plan is a leading cause of poor project execution. It is important that the project plan of execution be developed early in the project, prior to starting any of the major activities. The project manager should take the lead in preparing the project plan of execution. However, it is important that participation by the engineering, procurement, construction, and other pertinent groups be enlisted in the planning process. The components of the project plan of execution will vary widely from project to project depending upon type and location. The planning process should start with the final milestone—mechanical completion or startup test run depending upon the scope of work—and proceed from there. The project plan of execution should stress those aspects which are unique to the specific project rather than the routine activities. The chapter includes different types of project planning such as construction planning, procurement planning, engineering planning, quality control planning and financial planning.
