ABSTRACT

Regardless of the project approach, the performance of the mechanical equipment specialists dramatically affects the tone of the project. This chapter presents the general responsibilities of the mechanical engineering team and guidelines. The project manager should be knowledgeable of a number of key areas including qualified staff, project documents, documents produced, documents reviewed, interfaces, and schedule. An engineering requisition document is used to transmit all of the necessary process and mechanical equipment information to the other disciplines, the client, and to the vendors. The technical bid evaluation is the formal review by the mechanical engineer of the vendor bids from which he will make a decision as to which vendor best meets the project specifications for the particular piece of equipment. The project manager should realize that these shop and site visits can contribute substantially to the smooth and rapid startup as well as to the experience and capability of mechanical engineers on subsequent jobs.
