ABSTRACT

The project manager should be aware of some of the pitfalls that may be encountered in the civil, structural, and architectural disciplines on the project. Beginning a project with a poorly defined scope of work guarantees wasted job hours and schedule delays. A logical and efficient schedule can only be conceived and completed if the scope of work is defined in detail, and the strategy of how to accomplish it is fully established. It should show the time span over which engineering specifications and drawings will be completed, the dates for procurement and delivery of equipment and bulk materials, the field start date, and the time span for each phase of construction. Many projects, especially those which have process or chemical engineering bases, may not be easily or economically interpreted within some building codes. Before visiting the building authority, one should have a full understanding of the local code requirements and all of the various options open.
