ABSTRACT

Quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) are terms that are quite often used synonymously to describe the programs which control the quality of work and assure management and others that the constructed facilities meet specifications. This chapter refers to quality control as the project systems that insure quality is built-in and the "feedback" mechanisms which cause corrections to be made when deficiencies are found. The types of contracts and subcontracts to be used at the construction site can have a significant impact on quality. When conflicts are uncovered during construction between codes, standards, specifications, and possibly the QA/QC plan, it is the responsibility of project management to see that a proper engineering resolution of the conflict is obtained. Inspections are conducted by inspectors, engineers, or others as the work progresses. They provide both a quality control and a quality assurance function. The basic responsibility for quality during the actual erection of equipment belongs with the craft people and their supervisors.
