ABSTRACT

A computer-aided project management (CAPM) system that will facilitate the project management processes can offer many benefits. This chapter analyzes the capability of CAPM to fulfill the needs of project management. These are approached from the viewpoint of the project manager, the project itself, the project team, and the senior management. The contractor can use off-the-shelf software including: scheduling, resource management, spreadsheet, database, and computer-aided design. Once the contract has been awarded and the work has begun, computer tools can manage and track the progress of the work. The builder can determine the long range schedule effects of design changes quickly, and pass this information on to the owner so that timely decisions can be made. The responsibility for orientation and training of the project team in the proper use of the CAPM system rests squarely with the project manager.
