ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates some applications of remote sensing in studies of herbaceous formations and permanent grasslands, mainly of temperate zones and a few examples of intertropical zones. It discusses Humid grasslands and marshes. Botanical and biogeographical investigations have resulted in identification of several types of herbaceous formations in the world. Herbaceous formations are characterised by highly variable quantities of aerial or subsurface biomass depending on their climax situation, degree of perenniality and mode of usage. Managers require information on distribution of herbaceous formations at a national level or at a more local level. A vegetation group is a collection of living species in a given environment. Some species are strictly associated with well-defined media and others may occupy entirely different environments. Pigments of many coloured flowers modify the reflectance only in the visible band and the spectral characteristic is constant in the other two spectral domains.
