ABSTRACT

A major improvement in productivity allowed one entire line to be turned off. A normal part of the daily operation was to stop drying occasionally to brush the starch off the inside walls of the tower. The first manager said he took a graduated cylinder, climbed up on top of the transport trailer, opened the hatch, and dipped the graduated cylinder into the alcohol. He then carefully climbed down, after closing the hatch, and placed the hydrometer in the cylinder and took a reading. Measurements appropriately displayed can be a powerful tool for communicating vital information that can be used to inform and persuade. When measurements are gathered in computer database and made available on request or published periodically, a number of things can occur. When having difficulty finding a measurement for something like management, describe what processes the managers do. Then many observable acts can lead to meaningful measurements.
