ABSTRACT

180Over 40 substances are classed as metals. Although many have the potential to cause toxicity, most do not produce significant human poisoning. This chapter will focus on five metallic poisons: arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, and mercury. Three additional metals are also discussed to a lesser extent. These are either reported less commonly than the other five as causes of toxicity (copper) or are contemporary sources for potential poisoning because of their use as part of fad diets or “nutritional” dietary programs (e.g., selenium and zinc).
