ABSTRACT

The mouse and the rat share many similarities with respect to their use in drug disposition studies. As described previously for the rat, mice can be easily obtained, housed, and handled. In fact, most experiments that are performed in the rat are carried out in a similar manner in the mouse. Drug-diet mixtures for mouse studies are prepared in an identical fashion to those used in studies in the rat. The specific drug-diet ratios, however, should be determined based on the average daily food consumption of a mouse, which is considerably less than that of the rat. The most commonly employed parenteral mode of administration in disposition studies in the mouse is via the intravenous route. In order to select an appropriate site of injection, it should be noted that serial blood collection is usually not attempted in the mouse due to its relatively small body size and total blood volume.
