Municipal water distribution systems are not built with separate single pipes extending from treatment plant to customer’s residence. Rather, a network of pipes is laid under me streets - different diameters, lengths, ages and materials. Some branch and loop; some are connected end to end. These more complex arrangements are referred to as Compound Pipe Systems. There are two basic types:
