ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapter, we discussed the Pierce instability close to the minimal threshold current of the instability; we saw that the instability is aperiodic. The following question then arises: does the behaviour of the Pierce instability change if the beam current considerably exceeds the minimal Pierce threshold? An analysis [2.14, 2.15, 2.21, 3.1–3.3] led to the following new results. (For simplicity, these results are first considered here for the case of a planar system; at the end of this section, we will also analyse the cylindrical system.)
