ABSTRACT
An intense charged particle beam can freely propagate through a medium if its space charge is neutralized by charges of the opposite sign. If the beam propagates through a neutral medium, this neutralization is a result of gas ionization by the beam. The neutralizing particles then accumulate in the beam while the oppositely charged particles are repelled from the beam by its electric field. Under certain conditions, the electric field of the beam may almost vanish.
