ABSTRACT
We begin this chapter by discussing some general properties that it is desirable for a partial differential operator to have. We will consider why these properties are desirable and illustrate with examples. We follow this discussion by introducing an important, and easily recognizable, class of partial differential operators that enjoy these desirable properties: the elliptic operators.
