ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on adaptive algorithm, derived from one particular criterion, using one iterative philosophy and implemented in one particular way. It is considers with some alternative possibilities for adaptive filtering. The chapter concentrates on alternative algorithms. A number of algorithms have been developed which can be classified as Least Mean Squares (LMS) variants. These include a wide range of possibilities but have the common feature that they start from the LMS algorithm, and attempt to improve on this by incorporating some modification, usually designed on an ad-hoc basis, to achieve some specified objective. In spite of the relative computational simplicity of the LMS algorithm, there are some applications, particularly in high speed communications, where even this computational load is too high. Efforts have been made to develop simplified algorithms with a reduced computational requirement. Another algorithm motivated by a desire to reduce the computationsd burden of LMS is the Block LMS algorithm.
