ABSTRACT

Preparedness is the key to eliminating or minimizing workplace violence incidents. Prudent employers should identify the potential risks of workplace violence in the specific operations and prepare beforehand to address specific needs during crisis times. Technology has advanced security measures. Gone are the days of the security guard walking a solitary route around a building. Present-day buildings are enhanced security cameras and laser beams to detect intruders. Electronic systems can provide or deny access to persons entering a workplace. Written workplace violence prevention and response programs should be carefully reviewed by company officials and legal counsel prior to implementation. The chain of command in the management team needs to be detailed so that every person knows his individual responsibilities and there is no confusion when an incident occurs. When an incident occurs, the responsibility will shift from the office manager or supervisor to a management team member. These responsibilities need to be detailed in writing, and training provided.
