ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the most important state and federal agencies that administer radiation regulations applicable to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). It explains what is covered in Part 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 20, and names the federal agency associated with these regulations. The chapter provides the scope and extent of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. It discusses some of the oil-producing states with NORM regulations in effect. The general radiation protection standards that these states apply usually reflect, verbatim, the federal regulations. However, the states are free to enact their own regulations and do so for certain aspects of radiation protection. In practice, most states require that DOT regulations be followed at all times when transporting radioactive materials on a public highway. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has included standards for occupational radiation dose limitations in its regulations. US Environmental Protection Agency regulations apply primarily to environmental releases.
