ABSTRACT

This chapter relates a number of case histories of problems with monitoring and recovery wells of various types and resolutions (if any) of these problems. Environmental professionals sometimes view their sphere of influence as being unique. One problem in dealing with well deterioration in environmental systems is a lack of a sense of history - knowing what was done before. Tests of wells over large areas have found biofouling organisms to be virtually ubiquitous in aquifer systems. The problems experienced by water supply systems must be considered to be the minimum that pumping wells on environmental projects will experience. A system of submersible pumping wells and eductor systems was employed. The recirculation water of the eductor systems was treated with chemicals to limit clogging and biofouling. Iron biofouling is a common maintenance problem afflicting pressure relief wells reducing hydraulic head across earthen dams.
