ABSTRACT

The Laplace transform is a powerful method for the solution of linear differential equations. The usefulness of logarithms depends, to a large extent, on the availability of the logarithm of every real number, either in a table or in the memory of a computer. In the same way, a table of Laplace transforms provides a quick method to obtain a solution to a linear boundary value problem. Laplace transforms are especially useful in mathematical models where either a system of linear differential equations or second order differential equations must be solved. The method of Laplace transforms can only be used for linear differential equations. In mathematical models the transformed equation simplifies to a product of several Laplace transforms on the right hand side, so that must be applied before the inverse transform can be taken.
