ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information dealing with the terminology used in the wastewater collection field, such as the classification of sewers and the advantages and disadvantages of each of these systems. It deals with the design, operation, and construction of waste disposal systems for rural areas. The Rational method to estimate peak flows from storm water runoff is covered, and a computer program to estimate the flow and the required storm sewer size is presented. Infiltration is water other than wastewater that enters the sewerage system through cracked pipes, defective joints, and cracks in the walls of manholes. Inflow is also water other than wastewater entering the sewerage system from sources such as roof basement, yard, and foundation drains; from springs and swampy areas and perforated manhole covers; through cross connections between storm and sanitary sewers, cooling towers, street washwater, and surface runoff.
