ABSTRACT
On theoretical grounds it makes sense to divide millimetre-wave sources into two general classes: incoherent wide-band sources and coherent oscillators. In practice, however, most sources will be of three identifiable types:
thermal incoherent wide-band sources;
vacuum state oscillators;
solid state oscillators.
