ABSTRACT

In a dairy, large quantities of water are required on a daily basis for production and other technical purposes. Water is a very valuable basic resource that belongs to all and is not available in unlimited amounts; it is therefore an important cost factor, which should lead to careful consumption. The water supply system in a dairy should be designed in such a way that consumption for each manufacturing department and auxiliary processes can be determined. Discharging untreated wastewater into public water system can lead to massive fish losses, as well as destruction of the biological self-cleaning in rivers, lakes and canals thereby resulting in major ecological damage. In some larger municipalities with a high-capacity wastewater treatment plant, dairies can discharge wastewater directly into the wastewater system, but it can be safely assumed that treatment costs increase. Biological wastewater treatment processes use specific effects that occur in nature without human intervention.
