ABSTRACT

Sulfur gases are emitted from a typical combustion stack as H2SO4 (not SO3) and SO2. The gas is withdrawn through a heated glass or glass-lined probe. Particulate matter in the sampled gas is removed with a silica-fiber filter maintained 10–20°C above the stack gas temperature and placed behind the probe. Sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide are then collected from the gaseous sample.
