ABSTRACT

Production management by computers requires optimum control of manufacturing information for integration of planning, implementation, and control of manufacturing. The information needed for this management decision at the right time at the lowest possible cost is adequately provided by means of the management information system (MIS) supported by a total systems approach. In constructing a large-scale system, such as computer-based production management systems, several modules with distinct functions required for planning, implementation, and control of manufacturing are integrated and connected to the computer based upon 'system integration'. A most widely used management information system for manufacturing or manufacturing information system for computers is the Communications Oriented Production Information and Control System (COPICS) developed by International Business Machines (IBM). In summary COPICS aims at computer-integrated production management on an on-line and real-time basis, through the total systems approach to planning, implementation, and control of manufacturing with rapid processing of production information by computer.
