ABSTRACT

Strategy means acts/procedures taken to achieve an aim. Tactics denotes actions to execute an individual task based on the strategy. Strategy deals with issues sustained for a long time period and tactics treat problems in the short term. Strategy is, therefore, futuristic rather than oriented for the present time and is involved in decision-making for issues in the future. Tactics give priority to decision-making for present problems. Strategy treats issues in the wide territory of the system environment, whilst tactics deal with problems of the narrow area inside the system. Corporate strategy deals with the strategic aspect of this corporate activity; extensive arguments have been presented since 1965. Manufacturing strategy consists basically of the minimum-cost/high-availability strategy and the highest-quality/flexibility strategy. Awareness of the environment, manufacturing flexibility and attention to the role of manufacturing managers are regarded as important requirements in manufacturing strategy.
