ABSTRACT

Instead of increasing the pressure, substantial increases in friction can be provided by filling 100% of the available space with a strong machinery adhesive. A combination of a light locational fit with high disassembly friction can solve many fitting problems. Certain generic design situations are benefited by increasing the friction in force fits with the commonly used fitting materials Grades K, L, S, T, and U. Machinery adhesives are also effective in fitting most hardened plain or flange bushings as well as nonmetallic Teflon or nylon-filled bushings. When one steps back and takes the long view of how to assemble cylindrical parts, it becomes evident that a combination of light or location press and an adhesive for friction improvement can give benefits available to neither alone. Field and laboratory experience indicate that the combination of light press plus an adhesive exceeds the fatigue of either a pure press or pure adhesive.
