ABSTRACT

A great variety of labor saving devices which the people take for granted in their daily activities utilize low frequency alternating current either directly, or indirectly through the electric utility industry power generation and delivery system. The ac induction principle has been studied since the electromagnetic laws were formulated. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is devoted to the analysis of multi-layered coils and windings using a one-dimensional formulation. It also describes a useful experimental design method for multi-layered coils with conductor geometries which are not well approximated by a one-dimensional analysis. The book comprises two detailed examples of magnetic induction processes which rely on the “Lorentz” force density for electromechanical coupling. It provides the reader with an understanding of how the analytical process leads to design information for this class of problems.
