ABSTRACT
Thomas Young proved that interference could be used to measure wavelength. Routine wavelength determinations were first undertaken by Joseph Fraunhofer (1787-1826), who in searching for a formula for a chromatic lens combinations, laid the foundations of dispersive spectroscopy.
