ABSTRACT
As we have seen, the method of Gaussian elimination is very useful in practice for solving systems of linear equations. However, it does not lend itself so effectively to theoretical questions, for which it is preferable to have general criteria for the solubility of such systems of equations in terms of the matrix associated to the system. Criteria of this type can be obtained using the notion of ‘rank ‘.
