ABSTRACT
Applications of the calculus of variations in science and engineering are conventionally done in the notation of “variations”. This notation has the distinct advantage of being analogous to that used in differential calculus. In this section, we introduce this popular variational notation and make use of it in subsequent sections whenever there is an advantage to do so.
