ABSTRACT

Basin analysis, the ultimate goal of a sedimentological study, unravels the complete depositional history of a sedimentary basin. This involves synthesis of observations on the framework of the basin, its sediment fill and also the biota associated with the sediments. The stages of basin evolution and the patterns of sediment dispersal are also to be worked out in detail. In short, basin analysis calls for complete knowledge of all aspects covering the processes and products of sedimentation within the sedimentary prism which constitutes a basin. This also demands a command over all the techniques and methods of sedimentology and related disciplines on the part of the analyser.
