ABSTRACT
Investigation of the flow associated with the suddenly accelerated flat plate has led to the insight that under certain circumstances the influence of viscosity—transport of momentum across fluid layers—is extremely confined in space. The presence of a bounding surface is “made known” to the viscous fluid through the no-slip condition, but the region that is influenced by this presence can be quite small.
