ABSTRACT

Before an individual or a group takes up the collection of data, it is necessary that certain basic information is at hand. Measurements without the complementary data, are normally insufficient to draw useful conclusions. The data required are:

Purpose of instrumentation, if not routine.

Cross-sections and plan of embankment dam instrumented, indicating each instrument, primary and redundant, and specific purpose.

Instrument manufacturers’ specifications for operating, calibrating and collecting data. Periodic check-up needed and maintenance required in routine use, sources of probable errors.

‘Record Tests Data’, that is test results of materials, installed near about the instrument, so as to give grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, field compacted densities and compaction moisture content, permeability, shear and consolidation characteristics at compacted densities. This data is instrument specific and is different than quality control data.

similar Record Test Data for instrument embedded in foundations, with compaction characteristics at in situ densities. 173

Data monitoring schedule, with stages and frequencies. Prescribed proforma for the collection of data.

Methodology for processing data at site and its transmission.
