ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the state of the art with regard to signal processing and algorithm design for the detection and tracking of air vehicles against an earth background. A large amount of signal processing circuitry is either mounted or fabricated directly on the boards. A In the previous sections, we discussed various implementations of the focal plane architecture and basic functions of the signal processor. Most of the discussion of filtering concepts involved the processing for the planar focal plane architectures. Since the planar-hybrid and Z-type focal plane architectures are competitive, it is believed instructive to compare the expected performance of these devices, particularly in the areas of signal processing and dim target detection. In making the comparison, only the filtering, detection, and correlation and tracking processes were considered. Initially, the simulation will be described, followed by discussions of the processing for both the planar and Z-type focal planes.
