ABSTRACT
Both psychosocial and environmental factors seem to work in concert and perhaps synergistically in Sick building syndrome (SBS) problems. Psychosocial factors such as work load, role conflict, work control, and job satisfaction have been shown to play a significant role when SBS symptoms are reported. When focusing on building-related environmental complaints including SBS-like symptoms, the causes are considered to be multifaceted in origin, and problems with the physical building environment is only one factor that influences building occupants’ well-being. The chapter focuses on the many risk factors including psychosocial and personal characteristics that impact on occupants’ sense of well-being. While most health practitioners would agree that there is a relationship between health and various psychosocial factors, the nature of that relationship and of the specific psychosocial factors involved is subject to considerable uncertainty. There is a wide range of opinion on the exact role that psychosocial factors play in building-related illnesses.
